Born in Mufulira, Zambia in 1976, Evans gained a BA in Fine Art from Glasgow School of Art in 2000. Evans served as a committee member at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow from 2002 to 2004. Recent exhibitions include: ‘Pilot 1, 2004’, London; ‘Britannia Works’, Athens (2004); ‘Lumumba is Dead’, Transmission Gallery, Glasgow (2003) with a forthcoming show at Tate St Ives, Cornwall (2005). Evans lives and works in Glasgow.
Evans’ practice builds on a skilful manipulation of sculptural and craft-based processes such as carpentry, boat-making, carving and ceramics, teasing complex narrative allusions from jagged modernist forms and irreverent, cartoon-like protrusions. In contrast to the luridly acerbic, sometimes clownish fa?ßade of the sculptures themselves, the appended titles refer to specific tales of protest and suffering derived from journalistic accounts of class war and neo-imperialist violence. These troubling and intricate visual aporias are enriched by the artist’s critical absorption in problems of the ‘other’ and the self-authenticating ruses of art, resulting in an unsentimental primitivist aesthetic.
