“When Sarah and I moved out to our caravan it was a raw January day, bleak cold, and wet. The caravan had been left a few months before and was leaking. Old carpets covered up even older ones and the woodwork was swollen, but through the daunting list of repair jobs we could see that it had something special. One of the things that was special was how cheap it was to live here for £60 a month; we had a caravan, a pigsty, a cowshed and large enough ground to let our imaginations go. It was as though someone had given us the creative break we needed…”
-Belinda Gilbert Scott
This exhibition focuses on informal artists’ residencies based in a series of caravans on Claylands dairy farm near the Campsie hills. The artists Sarah Kenchington, Belinda Gilbert Scott and Katy Dove instigated the whole thing in 2006. At first they used one caravan as a getaway from the city and a place to work freely, though now there are four caravans on site and over 15 artists have stayed there on residencies. In May 2006 Sophie Macpherson wanted to conclude her residency with a performance, and from this grew The Caravan Club, a series of performance nights where artists are encouraged to work on a piece outside their usual practice, presenting it in a safe and supportive environment.
