Gary Rough, Sorcha Dallas, Glasgow

Gary Rough

Dates: October–November 2004

Gary Rough’s show at Sorcha Dallas will be the artist’s first solo show in Glasgow in over six years. Rough will develop further his interest in the everyday through a series of neon works inspired by his subconscious pencil drawings, mythology ,superstitions and his mapping of the city in which he lives. His daily journeys are tinged by the artists own recollections and emotions, making his very existence anongoing body of work. Born in Glasgow in 1972, Rough studied for a BA and MFA at Glasgow School of Art between 1991 and 1998. A former member Glasgow art group Filthy Swan, Rough now lives and works in New York. Recent exhibitions venues include the 50th Venice Biennale , Inverleith House, Edinburrgh and PS.1 MoMA in New York. Chaste of American haste, gruff and wise – comprised of dysfunctional neon signs, bric-à-brac and notes scribbled while inebriated – Rough’s personalised installations conceal a flamboyant romantic irony born of an heretical wit. A commissioned text by Ross Birrell accompanies the show.
