Nick Evans’ practice builds on a skilful manipulation of sculptural and craft-based processes such as carpentry, boat-making, carving and ceramics, teasing complex narrative allusions from jagged modernist forms and irreverent, cartoon-like protusions. In contrast to the luridly acerbic, sometimes clownish fa?ßade of the sculptures themselves, the appended titles refer to specific tales of protest and suffering derived from journalistic accounts of class war and neo-imperialist violence. These troubling and intricate visual aporias are enriched by the artist’s critical absorption in problems of the ‘other’ and the self-authenticating ruses of art, resulting in an unsentimental primitivist aesthetic.
