Laddy and the Lady, Filmhouse, Edinburgh (19/08/2006)
Screening as part of the Edinburgh International Film Festival
With: Henry Coombes

An experimental document linking people and places from the Isle of Skye to the city of Glasgow; a fraught relationship between a lady and her dog; and a menacing machine that is more than the sum of its parts. Three new films supported by the Artists Film and Video Scheme highlight the health and diversity of artists’ film. This screening and subsequent panel dicussion set out to examine the nature of artists; film, and debate its current role in culture. The Artists’ Film and Video Scheme was launched in 2004 as a partnership fund between the Scottish Arts Council and Scottish Screen to support visual artists in Scotland with the creation of new work in this field. ‘Laddy and the Lady’ by Glasgow-based artist Henry Coombes, follows the travails of Laddy, a golden retriever on a pheasant shoot, torn and troubled by the relentless discipline and emmotional rollercoaster of gun dog handling. There will be three films screened followed by a panel discussion Chair: Professor Martin Kemp Panel: Fiona Bradley, Director of the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh: Henry Coombes, artist; Matt Hulse, artist; Becky Lloyd, Development Executive, Scottish Screen
