‘Tender Scene’, The Herald, 7th July 2007

Now in its 10th year, the Changing Room gallery has always excelled at mounting thought-provoking group shows. This time, Tender Scene transports four Glasgow-based artists to Stirling for a mixed exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculpture. Fiona Jardine looks beyond the world of visual art, finding inspiration in everything from Modernist poetry to adsurdist theatre and medieval statuary. The results and meticulously-drawn works laden with symbolism. Alex Pollard, who represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale in 2005, and wowed Edinburgh audiences with a major show at Talbot Rice last month, is known for examining his own practice, making anthropomorphised models from art equipment, or crafting clowns out of make-up. Add Clare Stephenson and Gregor Wright into the mix, and a theme of sorts seems to emerge, these very different artists all deal in innovative ways of processing information, looking around them and to the past. Clever stuff.
