Sculpture, installation and drawing
Alex Pollard, Cathy Wilkes, Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan – Echo Echo Collective Gallery, Edinburgh, until Sat 21 Jan
Artists Alex Pollard, Cathy Wilkes, Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan have little to prove. Fresh from their Venice Biennale Selective Memory show, they are returning home to reinstall their work into the Collective Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Although the capital’s surroundings lack the auspicious decor of Venice’s Campo San Rocco, the more modest space of the Collective will give locals a chance to see the homemade installations without the pricey hike to Italy’s biannual art depot.
From Pollard’s faux museum relics made out of measuring rulers, to Tatham and O’Sullivan’s monolithic cartoon faces. The tone is modified for Cathy Wilkes’ work, ‘She’s Pregnant Again’, an awkwardly constructed installation reeking of petrol fumes with an ominous children’s buggy lurking in the corner. But in its local surroundings the show no longer has the luxury of being a foreign and thoroughly Scottish curiosity. Echo Echo’s home location will test the mettle of these works and challenge exactly how representative of Scotland the work was at Venice, by the very people it was meant to represent.
