'Henry Coombes: Laddy and the Lady' (The Herald, 06/07/2006)
In a pleasing riposte to this years remake of Greyfriars Bobby, the London-born, Glasgow-trained film-maker Henry Coombes presents the sad tale of golden retriever Laddy. Taken on a shooting trip by his upper-crust lady owner, he persistently lets his boisterous enthusiasm get the better of him and faces harsh retribution. As we learn from flashbacks to his puppy years, he has long experience of hardship. Coombes, who won Glasgow School of Art’s Newberry Medal for best graduate in 2002, received a Scottish Arts Council grant of ¬£15,000 to make the film. He’ll be at Tramway to talk about it next Wednesday at 6.30pm.
