Roger Cox, ‘Laddy and the Lady’, The Scotsman, 1st July 2006
It’s hard to keep a straight face whilst reading the synopsis for Glasgow-based Henry Coombes’s new video. The Laddy of the title is a golden retriever – an actor in a dog costume – who goes on a pheasant shoot with his lady owner, only to be abused when he can’t retrieve properly. These scenes are intercut with flashbacks to his troubled past as a puppy. Coombes is series artist. In 2002 he won Glasgow School of Art’s prestigious Newberry Medal, and he has since had solo shows at Glasgow’s Transmission and Switchspace galleries. So wipe that smile off your face.
