'La Femme De Nulle Part' (Scotland on Sunday, 01/03/2007)
Curated by Glasgow-based artist Lucy Skaer, this exhibition of drawings, films and installations which translates as ‘The Woman From Nowhere’, tracks the historical and theatrical connections between the film work of New York-born Anita Di Bianco, London-born former Beck’s Futures winner Rosalind Nashashibi and Glasgow-based Sophie Macpherson.
Di Bianco credits Jean Genet’s claustrophobic play The Maids as inspiration for her short film Disaffection And Disaffectation. As an artist whose large-scale sculptural installations often resemble stages or catwalks, Macpherson’s work explores the magician’s apparatus and how realities can flip into theatricality.
Finally, Rosalind Nashashibi contributes her series The Abbeys, which are inverted pages of a book on 12th-century Cistercian architecture. Upside-down, the floating holes and arcs of the architecture can be perceived as floating faces.
