Rory Weller, 'Five Questions For… Belinda Gilbert Scott' (The Metro, 21/11/2008)
Four years ago, artists Belinda Gilbert Scott, Sarah Kensington and Katy Dove began inviting artists and other creative people to come and take part in residencies at their cluster of caravans on a dairy farm near Loch Lomond. The fruits of the labours o the 15 artists involved go on show in Open Field at the CCA this weekend.
What were you hoping to achieve with the residencies? To encourage people to talk about their work and have a place to stay where they could enjoy themselves. And to be playful and make work without feeling that hey had to conclude anything they’re doing.
Has your own work changes because of the project? Definitely. If you’re on your own you don’t get the same stimulus. It’s exciting getting feedback about what you’re doing.
Do you miss the bricks-a d-mortar world much? The beauty of the caravan is that it’s got such big windows that even on a dull day, it brings in the light. when you’re in a building you really notice how dark it is.
What does the farmer think about what you’re doing? He comes down and has a cup of tea and tells us about the cows and we talk about our work. He’s very open and interested and often makes really sensitive remarks about what we’re doing.
Why did you decide to come into the city to hold the exhibition? It’s a way of sharing it with as many people as possible.. If we’d done it in the country we’d have got a handful of people coming to see it. It’s a really good way of bringing that rural feel into the city, which I think is a nice gesture.
