Jan Patience, 'Gallery Round-Up' (The Herald, 10/05/2008)
The Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition is always one to watch (and perhaps dig deep into your pockets for) and this year is no exception, with a round 350 works on display. In addition to selected works, expect to see that of RSA members such as Elizabeth Blackadder DBE, Calum Colvin, Bill Scott, Adrian Wiszniewski, Michael Visocchi and Barbara Rae.
The exhibition takes up all 12 of the magnificent RSA galleries and includes painting, sculpture, filmmaking, architecture and installation. It also includes the specially curated New Scots/New Scotland, which highlights the work of contemporary artists who have made Scotland their home. These include Alex Pollard, David Shrigley, Hanneline Visnes, Ilana Halperin, Erica Eyres, Nathalie de Briey, Louise Hopkins, Shauna McMulln, Barry Atherton, Sam Ainsley and RSA members Thomas Joshua Cooper, Beth Fisher and Joe Fan. Barry Atherton’s haunting portrait of the late lamented Steven Campbell is a highlight. A complimentary show in the RSA library called New Scots promises a fascinating walk through the RSA archives.
