'Spanner (Stretcher/Loiterer)'

Commissioned by Sorcha Dallas in association with Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art

20th April - 7th May
Opening Times Monday-Saturday 10am-6pm (Thursdays til 8pm)

Sorcha Dallas is pleased to present 'Spanner (Stretcher/Loiterer)' by the Berlin based artist Nairy Baghramian. In her work Baghramian often references literature, theory and modernist design to explore aspects of social and political relationships. This installation will be the first time the artist's work has been presented in Scotland. For her temporary project at The Mitchell Library Baghramian has sited her work in the majestic Reading Room. The installation is comprised of a long, chrome-plated, brass pipe sculpture jammed diagonally within the space. The subtlety of the work does not distract from the ornate beauty of the room but highlights and utilises the existing architecture, with the sculpture appearing contained by the existing walls, generating tension and questioning the limits of the space itself.

Baghramian was born in Isfahan in Iran in 1971. She lives and works in Berlin.  In 2010 she had a two person show with Phyllida Barlow at The Serpentine Gallery, London. Previous solo shows include  Studio Voltaire, London; Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany and The Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland. She is represented by Galerie Daniel Buchholz.
